Rewarding Drivers: A Focus on Safety

Last March, Aim Integrated Logistics started an aggressive inspection reward program to help keep the company and driver Compliance, Safety and Accountability (CSA) scores as low as possible. To help accomplish this, Aim set up a special account that would “credit” or “debit” a driver for all roadside inspections.

For every clean or “no violation” inspection report, drivers received a credit as follows: Level I = $300; Level 2 = $200; Level 3 = $100. If a violation was recorded on the inspection, then a corresponding dollar amount was entered as a “debit.”

During the nine-month program, Aim drivers had a combined total of 116 “no violation” inspection reports. Drivers, including top-dollar winner, WALTER STEC IV (Trumbull Industries), were awarded a total of $18,600.

Response to the program was overwhelmingly positive, as noted by some of the award winners’ comments: “It keeps me on my toes. I make a lot of short trips, and it would be easy to take a short cut, but with the program I pay attention to the details when doing my equipment inspections and by driving safely,” said JIM GARY, Sapa-Cressona, Pa.

“Going through a roadside inspection can be an apprehensive event; knowing there is award recognition for passing the inspection makes it all worthwhile. By far, this is the most generous inspection program,” said JOHN ULMER, Geneva account and Aim driver trainer.

The program has had a positive effect by reducing our percentile ranking in each of our CSA BASICs from the start of the program in March through the cut-off in November. The Vehicle Maintenance BASIC saw the biggest improvement, going from 40.9 percent in March to 31.7 percent in November.
